Then we go into the Cathay Pacific Boeing 747-400 simulator in Hong Kong. This multi-million dollar simulator is used to show you some incredible facts about the -400. Demonstrations include a full take-off from 09R at Heathrow, from engine start-up (including a hot engine start). Full explanation of what is happening along with views of the PFD (Primary Flight Display). High and Low speed stalling with dramatic actions, engine fire, plus much more. Then we go back to flight CX250 for the landing into Kai Tak. This multi camera shoot of one of the world’s most demanding landings is something to treasure forever. About the crew.
Captain Don Grange joined the RAF as an 18 year old direct entry pilot in January 1966, flying Chipmunks and Jet Provost MK3 & 4s. He carried out a conversion to the Hercules C130 in August 1968 and then joined 47th squadron in 1970 and flew the last flight out of Changi, Singapore in November 1971. The following year he received his command on the C130. He flew 42 ship formations in September 1973 in Turkey. At the end of his 8 year contract with the RAF Don joined BOAC in 1974 as VC10 second officer. In 1977 he joined Cathay Pacific Airways as a first officer on the Boeing 707 fleet. In 1980 he converted the Boeing 747 classic. In 1985 he obtained his command on the Tristar and became a Training and Check Captain. In 1990 Don converted to the Boeing 747-400 requalifying as a Senior Training Captain. He has over 10,000 hours total flying time.
